The blood pressure medication Benicar has recently been found to cause gastrointestinal side effects similar to those of celiac disease, a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing nutrients in food products. The similarity of these Benicar side effects and celiac disease may result in a misdiagnosis and improper treatment.

Benicar Side Effects Mimic Celiac Disease Symptoms: Study
Benicar, a hypertension drug, has been linked to multiple reports of severe gastrointestinal side effects, producing symptoms typically linked to celiac disease, which may result in a misdiagnosis and improper treatment. According to a June 2012 study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the side effects of Benicar should be considered when users of the drug experience gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, persistent diarrhea, unusual weight loss and electrolyte abnormalities.
From 2008 to 2011, Mayo Clinic doctors treated 22 Benicar users from 17 states who had suffered symptoms similar to celiac disease, or who had been diagnosed with the condition after undergoing treatment with the drug. The study’s authors determined that once patients stopped taking Benicar, their symptoms improved significantly.
According to the Mayo Clinic, celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestines that occurs strictly in patients who are genetically predisposed to the disease. There is currently no known cure for celiac disease, and the only effective treatment is a gluten free diet. However, researchers found that Benicar users had their symptoms greatly improve once they discontinued use of the drug.
Mayo Clinic researchers hope that with awareness of the similarity between the side effects of Benicar and celiac disease, doctors will think about similar prescription drugs as a potential cause in other cases.
