What's the Problem?
This recall affects about 1,400 Beal Birdie Belay Devices used to protect rock climbers while climbing, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].
“The firm has received three reports of the user being unable to lower the climber because the hand lever became detached from the device,” CPSC said.
The recalled belays were sold with an orange, blue, or green handle. This recall affects all Birdie Belays marked with the batch year “/19” on the side of the unit.
Affected belays were sold online, at REI stores, outdoor equipment stores and indoor rock climbing gyms nationwide from July 2019 through February 2021 for about $75.
If you purchased a climbing belay that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact Liberty Mountain for a free replacement.
This recall began on March 24, 2021.
