NBC News Investigation Highlights Bard IVC Filter Risks

A year-long investigation by NBC Nightly News has raised serious questions about why C.R. Bard continued to sell its inferior vena cava (IVC) filters even after the company became aware that the devices were failing and causing death and other adverse health complications at rates significantly higher than competing brands.

Report Takes Aim at Bard IVC Filters

According to the NBC report, at least 27 deaths have been linked to use of the Bard Recovery IVC Filter. NBC also looked at government data that identified about 300 non-fatal complications linked to that specific device.

How Do Blood Clot Filters Work?

Blood thinners are usually an effective solution for patients at risk of developing blood clots. However, not everyone can tolerate these drugs. In patients who cannot take blood thinners, IVC filters may be implanted to protect against pulmonary embolism (blood clot trapped in the lungs).

What’s the Problem?

Many patients have reported suffering adverse health complications after receiving IVC filters. In many cases, the devices’ legs or “struts” have shattered and traveled to the lungs, heart, kidneys and other organs. There have also been reports of filters shifting within the vena cava, making removal nearly impossible.

How Many People Have IVC Filters?

According to NBC, about 250,000 Americans who are unable to take blood thinners have been implanted with IVC filters. While all of the devices come with some risk of complications, the Bard Recovery has posed a particularly high degree of risk for patients. About 34,000 Recovery filters were sold before the company replaced the device with an updated model called the G2.
