According to an FDA Recall Notice [1] dated February 12, 2025, this action affects the following products:
- Brand Name: CHOSHIYA
- Product Name: MENMA AJITSUKE PREPARED BAMBOO SHOOTS
- Container: 8.8oz plastic bag
- JANCODE (UPC): 4983673527332

These bamboo shoot products are packaged in a plastic bag, and were distributed at Tokyo Central Costa Mesa store in Costa Mesa, California.
Why was the Bamboo Shoot Recall Issued?
The problem was discovered on January 14, 2025, at the Tokyo Central Costa Mesa retail store where the affected bamboo shoots were found being sold in non-refrigerated conditions. The missing “Keep Refrigerated” label was likely the source of confusion.
The bamboo shoots were immediately removed from sale at the store.
What is Clostridium Botulinum?
Clostridium botulinum is a rod-shaped, anaerobic bacterium that produces botulinum toxin, one of the most potent neurotoxins known. It is commonly found in soil, water, and improperly canned or preserved foods, where it thrives in low-oxygen environments and can cause botulism, a severe paralytic illness.
While the toxin is dangerous, purified botulinum toxin is also used in medical and cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, to treat muscle disorders and reduce wrinkles.
Botulism Symptoms
Botulism symptoms typically appear 12 to 36 hours after exposure to Clostridium botulinum toxin and can vary based on the type (foodborne, wound, or infant botulism).
General Symptoms of Botulism:
- Blurred or double vision
- Drooping eyelids (ptosis)
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Slurred speech
- Dry mouth and thick-feeling tongue
- Muscle weakness, starting in the face and spreading downward
- Paralysis that progresses to the arms, legs, and respiratory muscles
- Difficulty breathing, which can lead to respiratory failure
FDA Recommendation
If you purchased any bamboo shoots that are affected by this recall, you should not eat them (even if they look and smell normal), and either throw them away or return them to Tokyo Central in Costa Mesa for a full refund.
Anyone concerned about a potential botulism food poisoning illness should contact their healthcare provider or dial 9-1-1 immediately.
