In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the use of testosterone supplements like Axiron by middle-aged and older men. Axiron is a synthetically-manufactured version of the naturally-occurring testosterone hormone in the body. Unfortunately, despite its popularity and widespread usage, synthetic testosterone boosters like Axiron have been linked to pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening medical condition in which a blood clot becomes trapped in the lungs.

New Studies Increase Concerns Over Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)
According to a new report issued by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) was found to be directly linked to thrombosis-pulmonary embolus – the occurrence of pulmonary embolism. The report discussed a recent study that was conducted involving men who had been hospitalized over the course of three years. Seven of the test subjects confirmed they had taken testosterone boosters like Axiron before and at the time they were admitted to the hospital.
Of the seven men who confirmed they had received TRT, five were determined to have previously undiagnosed familial or acquired thrombophilia, which suggests an active interaction between thrombophilia and testosterone supplements, leading to pulmonary embolism.
According to another study published by the National Institute of Health (NIH), testosterone users were five times more likely to develop respiratory illnesses, such as pulmonary embolism, compared to those who were administered a placebo.
What is a Pulmonary Embolism?
A pulmonary embolism is characterized by the sudden blockage of an artery in the lungs, in most cases caused by a blood clot. In some patients, the clots are small and don’t lead to death, but they can still cause permanent lung damage. In severe cases, blood clots can be large enough to completely block the artery, which can lead to death if it is not treated immediately.
Symptoms of an Axiron pulmonary embolism may include:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Sharp chest pain
- Cough that produces pink mucus
- Excessive sweating
- Elevated heart rate
