Axiron, a widely-prescribed testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) product, has been reported to cause blood clots in some users. In response to these problems, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation to learn more about the risk of blood clot and other serious side effects that may be associated with testosterone supplements. Signs and symptoms of an Axiron blood clot may include pain in the calf, shortness of breath, chest pain and coughing up blood.

How Can Axiron Cause Blood Clots?
Prescription testosterone medications like Axiron increase the percentage of red blood cells in the human bloodstream. Over time, this increase in red blood cells can cause blood clots to develop. These clots often form in the legs, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). From there, blood clots can break away and travel to the:
- Brain, causing a stroke
- Lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism
- Heart, causing a heart attack
Some Axiron blood clots may also originate in the brain, lungs or heart.

Studies: Testosterone Linked to Blood Clot, Stroke, Death; No New Warnings
In November 2013, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) “suggested a 30 percent increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in the group that had been prescribed testosterone therapy.” The safety of TRT was further questioned in a January 2014 study published in the medical journal PLOS ONE. This study involved a cohort of nearly 56,000 men who had undergone testosterone replacement therapy. According to the FDA:
“The study reported a two-fold increase in the risk of heart attack among men aged 65 years and older in the first 90 days following the first prescription. Among younger men less than 65 years old with a pre-existing history of heart disease, the study reported a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attack in the first 90 days following a first prescription.”
The JAMA and PLOS ONE study prompted the FDA to launch a new investigation into the safety of testosterone boosters like Axiron. However, the agency did not announce that it is requiring any new warnings on the labeling of these products. Indeed, a recent article published in the New York Times indicated that TRT products’ labels and advertising materials currently carry no such warnings. To address this, the consumer watchdog group Public Citizen has petitioned the FDA to require black box warnings, the most serious kind of warning allowed by law regarding “… the increased risks of heart attacks and other cardiovascular dangers to the product labels of all testosterone-containing drugs available in the U.S.”
