What’s the problem?

July 22, 2011 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today that Jetro Cash and Carry Enterprises LLC/R.D. Food Services LP, an importer from New York, is currently recalling approximately 2,900 pounds of the following diced bacon products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes:

  • 10 lb. shipping container with 2, 5 lb. bags boxes containing 2 5-lb bags of “Assoluti Cooked Diced Bacon” – These products can be identified by a case code of 1173 and EST No. 169A, as well as the Canadian mark of inspection and a Certification Number of 406515, 406516, or 406562.

The issue was discovered through routine testing conducted by the FSIS on July 19, 2011. The initial product found to be contaminated was put on hold, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency notified FSIS that additional products represented by the positive samples had been shipped to distributors in the United States. To date, there have been no reports of illnesses connected to this recall.

Assoluti Bacon Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. A person who has contracted listeriosis typically experiences fever and muscle aches, often preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems. Nearly everyone who gets listeriosis has an ‘invasive’ infection, in which the bacteria spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract. Healthy adults rarely become severely sickened by Listeria bacteria. However, certain individuals face an increased risk of listeriosis including:

  • newborn babies
  • pregnant women – expecting females are some 20 times more likely to get listeriosis than the average healthy adult
  • those with otherwise compromised immune systems
  • patients with cancer, diabetes, AIDS, or kidney disease
  • the elderly

Listeria infections are typically diagnosed with a blood or spinal fluid test. In pregnant women, a blood test is considered the most reliable way to confirm a listeria diagnosis. The CDC also recommends that high-risk individuals falling into any of the categories listed above who develop signs of serious illness within two months of eating contaminated food products contact their physician and inform him or her about their exposure to listeria. In most cases, contamination by Listeria monocytogenes can be prevented by following a few simple rules:

  1. do not consume raw (unpasteurized) milk or milk products
  2. wash hands and all kitchen utensils after preparing uncooked food
  3. rinse raw produce thoroughly before eating
  4. keep uncooked meats separate from fruits and vegetables
  5. thoroughly cook meat to a safe internal temperature
  6. eat perishable (ready-to-eat) foods as soon as possible
  7. heat hot dogs, cold cuts, and deli meats before consuming
