What’s the Problem?
FSIS was first notified about the potential outbreak last month; receipts and shopper cards from 8 patients clued investigators in to the likely source of the salmonella illnesses.
Onset of illness dates range from Aug. 5 to Sept. 6, FSIS said. Affected products, which all bear the Establishment Number 267 inside the USDA mark of inspection, were packaged under the following brand names:
- Cedar River Farms Natural
- Conor Perfect Choice
- Gourmet Burger and Grass Run Farms Natural
- JBS generic brand
Eating salmonella-tainted food can lead to salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Signs and symptoms of the infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, usually within 12 to 72 hours after eating the food.
FSIS is concerned that some consumers may still have the recalled items in their freezers. People who have purchased these products are urged not to use them and should either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
The illness typically lasts about 1 week, and most people recover without treatment. However, diarrhea can be so severe in some cases that patient needs to be hospitalized.
Anyone who is concerned about an illness possibly associated with salmonella should contact a healthcare provider.
