What’s the Problem?
About 7,000 lawsuits have been filed on behalf of men alleging injuries from testosterone boosters; about 4,200 of these cases involve AndroGel. All of the complaints similarly allege that manufacturers of testosterone supplements failed to warn about the risk of adverse cardiovascular complications (heart attack, stroke, blood clots, etc.). The men who filed the complaints allege they wouldn’t have taken the supplements had they been aware of the risks.
AndroGel was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 for the treatment of hypogonadism, also known as testosterone deficiency, which occurs when the testes fail to produce the male sex hormone testosterone, sperm, or both. However, manufacturers of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) supplements started marketing their products for other purposes, such as to treat age-related low sex drive, fatigue and increased body fat.
The proposed settlement follows a half-dozen bellwether trials, which arrived at mixed conclusions. AbbVie won a suit in January filed by a 72-year-old man who claimed that AndroGel caused his pulmonary embolism. The company was victorious in another case which the plaintiff claimed the drug caused his deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Plaintiffs won the other cases.
