A recent study has determined that prescription testosterone boosters like AndroGel could increase the risk of heart attack and other severe cardiovascular side effects. Men with pre-existing heart problems were more likely to suffer one of these complications compared to healthy men who didn’t take testosterone supplements, according to the research, which followed approximately 8,700 testosterone users for a period of 3 years. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

How are Heart Attacks Treated?
Calling 9–1–1 is the fastest way to get medical treatment for an AndroGel heart attack. If you or a loved one has any symptoms of a heart attack, call 9–1–1 right away. If your doctor has prescribed nitroglycerin to you in the past, take one dose immediately. If symptoms do not improve within five minutes, seek medical attention.
There are a number of treatments that may open blocked arteries that are causing a heart attack. The blocked artery can be opened by injecting clot-busting medications into a vein (fibrinolysis), or through a procedure known as angioplasty, which is performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory (“cath lab”). Angioplasty involves the placement of a stent, which is shaped like the spring of a ballpoint pen, and may be inserted into the artery to keep it open after the clot is removed.
Once the patient arrives at the hospital, the form of treatment depends on the type of heart attack he or she is having, and how quickly they can be treated. Not all facilities are equipped to perform 24-hour emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). If the patient is too far away from one of these facilities, clot-busters may be the best treatment to re-open blocked arteries. Clot-busters may not work with some patients, depending on their previous medical history. The patient will be asked if they have a history of a trauma, or have had major surgery in the recent past. If the answer is yes, it will be factored into the decision of which course of treatment is best.
If the doctor decides the patient needs an angioplasty, they will be taken to the cath lab, which is equipped with an x-ray machine where an angiogram (x-ray image of the arteries) will be performed to reveal the heart’s blockages. The actual PCI procedure will then be conducted to open the obstructed artery.
After the arteries are unblocked, the patient will be transferred to the coronary care unit (CCU). The CCU is the part of the hospital that is designated for patients requiring care after heart surgery. Patients are instructed to lie flat for up to 12 hours after surgery to ensure that the puncture wound can heal properly. Patients are monitored with an electrocardiography (ECG) machine, blood tests and routine checks around the clock. The doctor may also order an echocardiogram, which is an ultrasound picture of the heart that shows how the muscle is functioning. It is a non-invasive test which can be performed at the patient’s bedside.

Most cases involving pharmaceuticals allege that a drug was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain side effect. In the case of testosterone supplements, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that manufacturers failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of heart attack.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?
By filing a lawsuit against the maker of AndroGel, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your heart attack, as well as for damages for pain and suffering. Additionally, filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s manufacturer accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace, and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.
