AndroGel, the best-selling testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) supplement on the U.S. market today, has recently been found to increase the risk of blood clots in certain users. AndroGel blood clots develop on the inside of vessels without an injury (as opposed to beneficial clots, which form as a response to injury), and do not dissolve naturally. This article discusses the various symptoms associated with an AndroGel blood clot.

Signs of a Blood Clot
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Blood clot (thrombus) that forms in a vein deep in the body, most often in the lower leg or thigh. In addition to being potentially caused by testosterone boosters, DVTs can result from certain inherited medical conditions that affect the blood clotting process. Deep vein thrombosis can also occur in a person who is immobile and doesn’t move for a long time, such as after a surgery, following an accident, or when you are confined to a wheelchair or nursing home bed.
Signs and symptoms of an AndroGel deep vein thrombosis may include:
- Swelling, typically in 1 leg or arm
- Leg pain or tenderness that feels like a cramp or charley horse
- Abnormal reddish or blue skin color
- Leg or arm warm to touch
Pulmonary Embolism (PE) – Sudden blockage in one of the arteries leading to the lungs. In most cases, the obstruction is caused by a deep vein thrombosis that migrates to the lung from one of the body’s deep veins. A clot that develops in 1 part of the body and travels through the blood to somewhere else is referred to as an embolus.
Warning signs of an AndroGel pulmonary embolism include:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Chest pain that is sharp and stabbing, which may get worse with deep breath
- Rapid heart rate
- Severe cough, which may be accompanied by bloody mucus
Pulmonary embolism is a medical emergency that can damage the lung because of a lack of blood flow to the lung tissue. This damage may cause pulmonary hypertension (increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries), low blood oxygen levels, and damage to other organs due to a lack of oxygen.
If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of a pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis, you should call 9-1-1 immediately. Between 350,000 and 600,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with blood clots each year, more than one-third of which are fatal.

Most cases involving pharmaceuticals allege that a drug was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain side effect. In the case of AndroGel, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that manufacturers failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of blood clot.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?
By filing a lawsuit against the maker of AndroGel, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your blood clot, as well as for damages for pain and suffering. Additionally, filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s manufacturer accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace, and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.
