What’s the Problem?

June 2, 2015 – The amended order, which was issued last Friday in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, directs the parties to submit a Proposed Case Management Order by August 10, which outlines parameters for selecting AndroGel plaintiffs in 2 tiers of lawsuits: 1) clotting injuries, and 2) cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks.

The Order further specifies that only cases for which a plaintiff’s fact sheet has been completed on or before June 15 are eligible to be selected as bellwether candidates. The first of 6 trials are scheduled to begin on October 31, 2016. The litigation is: In re: Testosterone Replacement Therapy Product Liability Litigation – MDL No. 254.

Testosterone Supplements Linked to Cardiovascular Side Effects: FDA Warning

Testosterone lawsuits began being filed in Jan. 2014, shortly after the FDA announced it was investigating a link between the drugs and cardiovascular side effects. The agency has since ordered manufacturers of prescription testosterone supplements to update their products’ labeling with information about an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and to revise verbiage pertaining to approved indications to make it clear that testosterone hasn’t been proven safe for treating age-related symptoms.

Multidistrict Litigation

Since the testosterone multidistrict litigation (MDL) was created in June 2014, over 1,500 lawsuits have been filed in the Northern District of Illinois, all of which allege that use of prescription testosterone boosters caused heart attacks, strokes and other life-threatening cardiovascular problems. Plaintiffs further accuse the drugs’ manufacturers of wrongly marketing their products as safe and effective treatments for lowered sex drive, fatigue and other age-related symptoms, even though they have never been approved for this use.
