Update: Androderm Labels Updated to include Addiction Warning
January 18, 2017 – FDA is requiring that all prescription TRT treatments carry a warning about a risk of abuse and dependence. Abuse of testosterone, usually at doses higher than those typically prescribed, has been linked to serious safety risks affecting the heart, brain, liver, mental health, and endocrine system.
What is Androderm?
Manufactured by Actavis, Inc., Androderm is a transdermal system that delivers testosterone through skin in the user’s back, abdomen, thighs, or arms. Androderm is made in two strengths that provide two or four mg of testosterone daily. Androderm was cleared for sale on the U.S. market in October 2011.
FDA Requires Heart Attack, Stroke Warning to be Added to Androderm Labels
March 3, 2015 – FDA issued a press release today announcing label changes that will be applied to all approved prescription testosterone supplements. The updated labeling warns that testosterone has been linked to heart attack, stroke, and other severe cardiovascular side effects, and that the supplements should not be prescribed to men for the sole purpose of treating symptoms associated with the normal aging process. Prescriptions for Testosterone Skyrocketing in the U.S.
Believe it or not, there is no scientific evidence suggesting that slowly declining testosterone levels in aging men is anything but normal. Despite this fact of nature, prescriptions for testosterone boosters like Androderm have skyrocketed over the past several years. Yearly prescriptions for testosterone in the U.S. have spiked more than fivefold since 2000, surpassing 5.3 million prescriptions and a market of almost $2 billion by 2011.
Although the Endocrine Society Practice Guidelines on testosterone use advises doctors to only prescribe the supplements after a confirmed diagnosis of Low T, many patients have been granted prescriptions without a real need. Research published in the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism found that many men with normal T levels are issued testosterone replacement prescriptions, as well as men who are diagnosed with the condition after a single test. However, one test is not sufficient to evaluate a man’s T levels, as they tend to fluctuate greatly depending on a number of factors such as:
- Weight gain
- Time of day
- Sleep quality
- Other issues
Side Effects of Androderm
In some users, Androderm side effects have been reported to include:
- Heart attack
- Blood clot
- Pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
- Transient ischemic attacks
- Brain damage
- Sudden death
‘Low T’ Itself Not a Medical Condition
There is also very little evidence to show that testosterone boosters provide any tangible benefit for all but the most severe cases of Low T. According to the medical literature, low testosterone doesn’t become a recognized problem until levels become seriously lowered from conditions like hypogonadism and hormonal deficiency. These problems are caused by serious medical issues like undescended testicles, pituitary tumor, or cancer therapy drugs.
Yet pharmaceutical companies have created a hugely successful market for testosterone boosters by advertising directly to consumers, suggesting that males seek treatment if they are experiencing generalized symptoms such as decreased libido, lower energy levels, occasional sadness, or becoming sleepy after meals – all of which are normal from time to time, whether or not a person has Low T.
