Alvogen Fentanyl Patch Recall Lawsuit

April 23, 2019 – Fentanyl opioid patches manufactured by Pine Brook, New Jersey-based Alvogen, Inc., recalled for dosing error. Labeling on patches may indicate wrong dosage, Prompting FDA warning.

The recall affects 2 lots of a transdermal patch used for delivery of the synthetic opioid Fentanyl, FDA said. Alvogen took the recall action after finding that patches inside some cartons may contain a different dosage than the carton states, which could lead to potentially deadly complications, including fentanyl overdose.

What’s the problem?

Alvogen, Inc, is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Fentanyl Transdermal System 12 mcg/h transdermal patches. The company says a small number of cartons contained 50 mcg/h patches.

Fentanyl Addiction Symptoms

Symptoms of addiction to fentanyl are similar to those caused by any habit-forming drug:

  • Cravings
  • Physical dependence
  • Tolerance
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Poor judgement
  • Risky behaviors such as stealing, lying, engaging in unsafe sexual activity, selling drugs, or crimes that could land the person in jail.
  • Drug-seeking
  • Financial trouble
  • Neglect responsibilities

FDA Recommendation

Patients who have discovered the carton contained patches with the wrong dosage are advised to return it where they bought it for a replacement.

The actual fentanyl patches do indicate the proper 50 mcg/h, but if a patient who purchased the 12 mcg/h carton doesn’t notice this and uses the 50 mcg/h patch, it may cause “serious, life-threatening, or fatal respiratory depression,” FDA said.

Alvogen said novice users of the fentanyl patch, children and the elderly population face the greatest potential increased risk. To date, the company said it is unaware of any overdose injuries or other adverse events to be linked to the recalled fentanyl.

Alvogen says it has not received reports of any adverse reactions as a result of the mix-up.
