Update: Altec Recalls D-Series Digger Derricks Over Injury Risk

Altec is recalling the following digger derricks set up for combined use and equipped with radio remote upper controls:

  • 2016-2020 Altec DH-B Series Digger Derricks
  • 2016-2020 Altec DH-E Series Digger Derricks
  • 2016-2020 Altec D3000-E Digger Derricks

“These units only have the derrick use capacity chart and do not have the combined use capacity chart,” NHTSA said. “The operator may not have access to the rated capacity information while they are operating the equipment in combined use, increasing the risk of an injury.”

This recall began in March 2021.

What’s the Problem?

Altec Industries Inc. is recalling certain Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices over a potential defect that could cause the pedestal to separate from the turntable, increasing the risk of severe injuries or death to the operator and others nearby. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects:

  • 2018-2020 Altec D2 Digger Derrick
  • 2018-2020 Altec D3 Digger Derrick
  • 2018-2020 Altec D4 Digger Derrick
  • 2018-2020 Altec DH-B Digger Derrick
  • 2018-2020 Altec DH-H Digger Derrick
  • 2018-2020 Altec AA55 Aerial Device
  • 2018-2020 Altec AM50 Aerial Device
  • 2018-2020 Altec A77 Aerial Device

The bolts that secure the pedestal to the turntable (with head marking 5185) on affected Digger Derricks may fail, NHTSA said. If the fasteners break, the pedestal may separate from the turntable, increasing the risk of injury or death.

Altec is notifying owners and dealers will provide replacement fasteners if necessary, free of charge. This recall began on July 7, 2020.

Bunt v. Altec Industries

In July 1995, a man who was allegedly severely injured when an Altec Digger Derrick he was using malfunctioned filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer in the Northern District of New York.

The incident occurred when the plaintiff, Bernard C. Bunt, Jr., was aloft in the bucket of an Altec digger derrick while working as a lineman for Otsego Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Bunt elevated the bucket to a point located on a power line pole when the controls became tangled in the power wires, causing the bucket to break free from the boom of the digger derrick and fall approximately 35 feet to the ground. As a result, Bunt sustained severe and permanent injuries to his right foot, according to the lawsuit.

Bunt subsequently filed a lawsuit against Altec citing jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. § 1332. The complaint maintained claims for negligence, breach of warranty, and strict product liability. Also included in the complaint was a claim for loss of consortium on behalf of the plaintiff Laura L. Bunt.
