What’s the problem?

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is recalling certain Fortesa Tires for a potential defect that could cause belt separation, increasing the risk of a crash and severe bodily injury, including death.

This recall affects Goodyear Fortera HL tires, size P255/65R18, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recalled Goodyear Tires were manufactured with a potential defect that could cause belt separation during use, NHTSA said. A belt separation could lead to loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash and severe injuries to the driver and passenger(s).

Goodyear is notifying registered owners and dealers will replace the defective tires, free of charge. This recall began on Feb. 28, 2020.

This recall began on June 7, 2022.

Goodyear RV Tires Recalled After Being Linked to Nearly 100 Deaths

Nine years after the last one was made, Goodyear has agreed to recall more than 173,000 recreational vehicle tires that the U.S. government says can fail and have killed or injured 95 people since 1998. Goodyear’s G159 tires have been under investigation by the NHTSA since December 2017.

The agency says the tread on affected tires can separate from the body, causing drivers to lose control and increasing the risk of a crash. Lawsuits allege that the tires were designed for delivery trucks and not for recreational vehicles that travel at highway speeds, and that Goodyear kept the problems secret for years by settling cases and getting judges to seal records.

Goodyear began cooperating with NHTSA’s investigation in 2018, but ultimately declined to issue a formal recall for the tires. Echoing the 1990s Firestone tires campaign, Goodyear maintained that the tires were not faulty, but were instead being used outside of their prescribed operating conditions, noting examples of customers overloading and/or under-inflating their tires. Goodyear says the motorhome manufacturers also failed to note adequate reserve loads.

Additionally, Goodyear said its G159 tire consistently met its “demanding” safety standards. Making matters worse, the G159 had been out of production for almost 20 years, which virtually eliminated the possibility that the tires could be found in a retail setting. However, Goodyear later ordered a recall to address any tires that may have still been on the market.
