A CDC analysis of epidemiological information has found that these bagged salads are a likely cause of the cyclospora infections. FDA is conducting a traceback investigation to determine the cause and source of the outbreak.

To date, at least 76 cyclospora illnesses, including 16 hospitalizations, have been linked to garden salads from ALDI, Hy-Vee, and/or Jewel-Osco. Illness onset dates range from May 11, 2020, through June 14, 2020.

States with cyclospora infections linked to the salads include:

  • Iowa (28)
  • Illinois (23)
  • Kansas (1)
  • Minnesota (10)
  • Missouri (7)
  • Nebraska (7)

This investigation is still in the beginning stages and there may be additional retailers and products impacted by the cyclospora outbreak. Anyone concerned about a potential food-borne illness should contact their physician immediately.

Cyclosporiasis Cases Tripled Due Largely to Bagged Salad: CDC

Between 2016 and 2017, the number of reported cases of cyclosporiasis doubled in the U.S., growing from 537 to 1,194, according to a July 2023 report from the CDC [2.].

The amount of annual cases tripled in 2018, reaching 3,519 cases, and continued in 2019 with 4,703 cases in 2019.

CDC researchers suspect the recent increase in cases can be attributed in large part to a salad kit that contained the pathogenic parasite that led to a spike in cases in 2022.

At the same time, the diagnostic tests used to detect cyclospora have become more widely available, helping us detect and track cases better.

“It is likely multiple factors that are responsible for increased US cases including more travel to areas in which the organism is prevalent, better diagnostic testing and awareness, and importation of food from Cyclospora-endemic areas,” said Amesh Adalja, MD, FIDSA, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security and an infectious disease expert.
