What’s the Problem?
February 23, 2017 – Against the Grain, Inc., initiated the recall after unopened cans of “Pulled Beef with Gravy Dinner for Dogs” were found to contain phenobarbital, according to an FDA Safety Alert issued on Feb. 14.
FDA considers the presence of pentobarbital in pet food, a barbiturate used in animal euthanasia, to be product adulteration. The agency has not been able to determine whether other Against the Grain products contain the beef that went into the recalled products.
Which Products are Affected by the Recall?
This recall includes:
- Against the Grain Pulled Beef with Gravy Dinner for Dogs
- 12 ounce can
- Lot Number: 2415E01ATB12
- UPC Code (second half): 80001
- Expiration Date: December 2019
FDA is continuing to investigate the suppliers of Against the Grain Pet Food to determine a possible cause for the presence of pentobarbital. The agency is also coordinating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to address any possible areas of shared jurisdiction at the suppliers.
Phenobarbital Overdose Symptoms
Oral exposure to pentobarbital can cause:
- Loss of balance
