Study Links Yaz to Increased Risk of Blood Clots

|

Yaz Blood ClotThe popular birth control pills Yaz, Yasmin, Yasminelle, Aida and Petibelle have been linked again to the increased risk of serious, life-threatening blood clots or venous thrombosis. In a recent study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the authors of the study found that birth control pills like Yaz, which contain the hormone drospirenone are twice as likely to cause blood clots than older generation birth control pills.  Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz continues to deny that their birth control pills have a higher risk factor for blood clots.

BIRTH CONTROL BLOOD CLOT UPDATE: 4/25/11
Two new British Medical Journal (BMJ) studies have confirmed that Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and other new ‘fourth generation’ birth control medications significantly increase the risk of blood clots over those taking older birth control products. The results of the studies highlight the well known fact that the mix of hormones needed to prevent pregnancy also promote clotting factors.

Yaz & Blood Clots

Birth control pills that contain drospirenone have become an attractive alternative to the older generation birth control pills that do not contain the hormone. It is believed that women prefer birth control pills like Yaz or Yasmin because the manufacturers have advertised that they cause less weight gain and promote clearer skin. Unfortunately, drospirenone thickens the blood so these possible benefits come at a cost of an increased risk of serious side effects like blood clots or venous thrombosis. The blood thickening characteristics of birth control pills like Yaz, Yasmin, Yasminelle, Aida and Petibelle can also lead to death.
