What’s the problem?
Xenical (orlistat 120mg) was approved by the FDA as a prescription product by FDA in 1999 for obesity management in conjunction with a reduced caloric diet, and to reduce the risk of regaining weight after prior weight loss.
Between 1999 and October 2008, the FDA received 32 reports of serious liver injury, including 6 cases of liver failure, in patients using Orlistat (also known as Xenical). Hospitalization was reported in 27 of the 32 cases.
The most commonly reported side effects described in the 32 reports of serious liver injury were jaundice, weakness, and abdominal pain.
Signs & Symptoms of Liver Injury
The FDA is advising consumers to consult their health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with the use of Xenical and development of liver injury. Some of the symptoms of Xenical induced liver injury could include any of the following:
- weakness or fatigue
- fever
- jaundice
- brown urine
- abdominal pain
- nausea
- vomiting
- light-colored stools
- itching
- loss of appetite
