Despite Massive Recalls, Toyota #1 Automaker in 2010
Toyota edges out GM for the title of world’s No. 1 automaker in 2010. Despite being plagued with numerous recalls, the automaker sold more than 8 million vehicles worldwide and saw its sales rise 8%.
Toyota Recall Update 1/24/11
Despite recall woes in the pivotal North American market, Toyota managed to remain the world’s top automaker for the third straight year in 2010. At 8.39 million vehicles, General Motors sold slightly fewer than Toyota, but rebounded spectacularly from 7.48 million vehicles in 2009.
The two automakers are currently in close competition, with a good chance that GM could once again claim the top spot. Toyota isn’t showing much growth in North America, and is growing at a substantially slower pace in China. Toyota dethroned GM as the world’s No. 1 automaker in worldwide vehicle sales in 2008 — a position GM held for almost 80 years.
GM made double-digit jumps in five of its top 10 markets, including a nearly 30% increase in China, where it sold 2.35 million cars. Toyota sold just under 850,000 vehicles in China. General Motors also marked a 12.4% sales rise in Russia and a 10.4% rise in Brazil. GM’s sales in the U.S. grew 6.3% to 2.21 million vehicles.
Three major recalls of automobiles by Toyota Motor Corporation took place at the end of 2009 and the start of 2010 that seriously damaged the company’s reputation. Toyota initiated the recalls after reports that several vehicles had experienced unintended acceleration. As of January 2010, Toyota had announced recalls of approximately 5.2 million vehicles for a pedal entrapment/floor mat problem, and an additional 2.3 million vehicles for an accelerator pedal problem. Approximately 1.7 million vehicles are subject to both recalls.
