Allegations in recent lawsuits claim that Merck’s controversial hair loss treatment drug Propecia (generic: finasteride) can cause severe anxiety attacks and prolonged bouts of insomnia. Plaintiffs allege that the long-term sexual side effects associated with Propecia that ultimately lead to anxiety can remain for years, long after patients have stopped taking the medication. Signs and symptoms of Propecia-induced anxiety may include feelings of panic or fear, obsessive thoughts, ritualistic behaviors, and problems sleeping.
Propecia Update 5/31/12: Attorneys involved in federal lawsuits over Propecia sexual side effects met with a multidistrict litigation (MDL) judge yesterday to discuss procedural matters and the upcoming structure of the trials. To date, only 18 Propecia lawsuits have been consolidated into the MDL; however, this number is expected to grow rapidly in the near future, as Propecia attorneys continue to review potential cases on behalf of individuals allegedly injured by the drug’s side effects. Propecia Update 5/22/12: The parents of a former Propecia user who committed suicide after suffering from persistent sexual side effects is blaming the widely-prescribed hair loss treatment for their son’s action. Twenty-two-year-old Randy Santmann killed himself in 2008 within a week of being released from a psychiatric facility, and just six months after discontinuing treatment with Propecia. Propecia Lawsuit Update 4/17/12: The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation announced yesterday that it had decided to centralize the federal Propecia litigation before U.S. District Judge John Gleeson in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Although the current consolidation will be limited to just nine federal Propecia lawsuits pending in courthouses around the country, experts expect this number to grow in response to Merck’s decision to update Propecia’s warning label to include information about the potential risk of persistent sexual side effects. Propecia Update 4/12/12: The warning labels of Propecia and Proscar will be updated to include information about sexual side effects, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced yesterday. The administration’s action came in response to its review of hundreds of adverse event reports that had been linked to the drugs. Click here to learn more.

How can Propecia cause anxiety?
Finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, blocks the conversion of testosterone to 5α-Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When this occurs, there is a temporary increase in testosterone and changes in androgens which have the potential to produce side effects like those experienced by women with PMS. The hormonal imbalances caused by Propecia can directly affect a user’s mood and personal outlook, resulting in prolonged bouts of anxiety and other serious psychological disorders.
What is anxiety?
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a complex psychological condition characterized by excessive, exaggerated worry about everyday life events. People with GAD tend to always expect the worst, and cannot stop worrying about their health, money, family, work, or school. These worries are often completely unrealistic and out of touch with the realities of everyday life. If left untreated, the anxiety may come to dominate and overpower a person’s thinking so much that it cripples the individual’s ability to function normally. Everyday activities such as work, school, and personal relationships may be severely impacted.
Signs and symptoms of anxiety
Generally speaking, anxiety affects the way a person thinks, but it can also lead to a number of physical symptoms as well. Signs and symptoms of Propecia-induced anxiety may include:
- excessive worrying
- persistent tension
- unrealistic view of problems
- restless or ‘edgy’ feelings
- muscle tension
- difficulty concentrating
- trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
- being easily startled
- In addition to these symptoms, people with anxiety may have other serious psychological disorders, which may include:
- panic disorder
- obsessive-compulsive disorder
- drug addiction
Treatment for anxiety disorders
Most anxiety disorders respond well to treatment, and often in a short amount of time. The specific course of treatment depends on the type of GAD and its severity. In general, most people suffering from anxiety can be treated with a combination of behavioral therapy and medication. Sometimes complementary or alternative treatments may also prove highly beneficial.
