What’s the problem?

Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate), manufactured and distributed by Sanofi-Aventis and/or Bristol-Myers Squibb is the sixth top selling drug in the United States with sales totaling $3.8 billion dollars.

Doctors commonly prescribe Plavix in combination with aspirin as a preventative measure against strokes and heart attacks.

A recent study published by the New England Journal of Medicine has found, “although doctors believe the combination of Plavix and aspirin should reduce the risk of a second heart attack, the combination not only does not help, but it nearly doubles the risk of death, heart attack or stroke in people with no history of heart disease. It was also found to be associated with increased risk for moderate and severe bleeding.”

Plavix Lawsuits Filed: Our California colleagues have recently filed a class action lawsuit claiming that the Defendants (manufacturers and distributors of Plavix) “rushed the drug to market and then launched an aggressive marketing campaign touting Plavix as providing greater cardiovascular benefits than aspirin, while being safer and easier on a person’s stomach.”

Furthermore and in part, the lawsuit also claims that the aforementioned assertions are not only false, but that the Company knew about the serious health complications from the use of Plavix® from its own studies and had been warned by the FDA repeatedly to stop its fraudulent advertising. “The company did not stop its misleading advertising, nor did it alert the public to the life threatening side effects of Plavix.”

Plavix Side Effects

Plavix has been linked to a variety of side effects including, abdominal pain, coughing gout, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, pneumonia, severe headaches, sinus inflammation, and bone marrow damage. However, the most serious and life-threatening side effects include:

• Gastrointestinal & Cerebral Bleeding or Ulcers – Plavix may cause potentially fatal hemorrhaging, including severe gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) or other stomach conditions.
• Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Death
