What’s the problem?

January 23, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that Jones’ Seasoning Blends LLC is now recalling the following mock salt products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella:

  • Jones’ Mock Salt Original: Organic Salt Free Seasoning, 1.6 oz bottles (UPC 0 94922 16616 6), 12 oz bags (UPC 0 94922 07199 6) and 16 oz bags (0 94922 16616 6);
  • Jones’ Mock Salt Spicy Southwest Blend: Organic Salt Free Seasoning, 1.6 oz bottles (UPC 0 94922 01560 0).

Considering the fact that there is no lot number identifying the bottles or bags, any of the above mentioned products purchased between July 1 and December 14, 2011 should be discarded immediately.

This recall was initiated because of possible Salmonella bacteria in the celery seeds used in Jones’ Mock Salt products. According to the FDA warning, Jones Seasoning Blends LLC is denying responsibility for the potential contamination. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

Salmonella Food Poisoning (Salmonellosis)

Eating food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria can lead to salmonellosis, an extremely serious bacterial foodborne illness. Salmonellosis infections can be potentially fatal, and are especially dangerous to children, the elderly, and those with otherwise compromised immune systems. The most common signs and symptoms of a salmonella food poisoning infection include:

  • diarrhea
  • abdominal chills
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting that can last up to a week

Most otherwise healthy individuals recover from salmonellosis without medical treatment. However, you should always consult your healthcare professional immediately if you begin to experience symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps. Salmonella food poisoning treatments may include:

  • antibiotics;
  • avoiding solid food until symptoms subside;
  • drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration;
  • rest.

If salmonellosis does not resolve quickly, hospitalization and rehydration with intravenous fluids may be necessary.
