What tests are used to diagnose thyroid cancer?

Janumet thyroid cancer tests and diagnosis procedures may include:

  • Physical exam – May be ordered to find lumps or enlargement in the neck, and to feel for the thyroid gland’s firmness.
  • Biopsy – Performed to look for abnormal cells in thyroid nodules. Thyroid cancer biopsies are usually accomplished with a needle in an operation called ‘fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA). Some individuals diagnosed with thyroid cancer may undergo surgical biopsies, where the nodule or thyroid gland is removed.
  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test – Analyzes the thyroid gland to find evidence of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
  • Calcium tests – If medullary thyroid cancer is suspected, calcium tests may be performed. Elevated calcium levels are an indicator of thyroid cancer.
  • Genetic testing – Used to look for abnormal genes thought to be associated with some cases of thyroid cancer.
  • Imaging tests – May be ordered to look for signs of thyroid cancer. Imaging tests typically include one or more of the following:
  • Nuclear scan – Finds nodules that absorb more radioactive iodine (‘hot nodules’) which are likely to be benign.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan – Used to analyze activity in the thyroid gland and find large thyroid nodules (goiters).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – Can illuminate enlargement in the thyroid gland, and identify the presence of tumors, tumor size, and location of tumors in other areas besides the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid ultrasound – Can help determine whether a thyroid nodule is a fluid-filled cyst or mass of solid tissue.
