What’s the problem?

Accordingly to commonly accepted scientific research, the causes of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease are due to a combination of factors including genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and alterations in the function of the immune system.

Despite the appearance of a genetic predisposition in the development of IBD, the triggering factor for activation of the body’s immune system has yet to be identified with any degree of certainty. Factors that can turn on the body’s immune system include an infectious agent (as yet to be identified), an immune response to an antigen, or an autoimmune process. As the intestines are always exposed to things that can cause immune reactions, more recent thinking is that there is a failure of the body to turn off normal immune responses.

In August 2006, the results of a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology confirmed that the acne drug Accutane (isotretinoin) causes an increased risk to its users of developing IBD. The study was conducted by a team of medical doctors at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. Approved by the U.S Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1982, Accutane is manufactured by Hoffman-La Roche.
