What are the signs & symptoms of GBS?

The symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome vary a great deal from patient to patient, so each has a unique case history. Sadly, pain appears to be the common feature. Typical symptoms of GBS develop quickly and include:

  • Tingling and numbness in the limbs
  • Muscle weakness
  • Temporary paralysis of the legs, arms, face and respiratory muscles
  • Difficulty with eye movement, speech, chewing or swallowing
  • Difficulty with bladder control or digestion
  • Slow heart rate
  • Low blood pressure

In certain individuals, GBS may progresses to complete paralysis. In the most severe cases, the paralysis continues up to the chest, freezing the breathing muscles and requiring the patient to depend on a ventilator.

What causes it?

The symptoms of GBS are caused by a loss of myelin, an insulating material that is wrapped around the nerve cells. There is a growing body of evidence to support the idea that, in certain cases, the body’s immune system becomes somehow confused after receiving a vaccine, and the myelin around the nerves becomes its target for destruction. When the myelin is lost, nerve impulses slow down or stop altogether.

Sadly, the majority of individuals experience GBS as the frightening illness it is. Patients may be almost completely paralyzed for a certain amount of time. Those experiencing the hyper acute form of the syndrome typically lose the use of their legs within 24 hours.
