What’s the problem?
Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, and is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic form of the drug from being manufactured in the United States. A Google search for “generic Avandia” may turn up any number of companies claiming to sell such a product, but the fact remains that these medicines are substandard, fake, and potentially dangerous to your health. Another common misconception is that rosiglitazone is a generic form of Avandia, but it is, in fact, just one of the ingredients in the drug.
The earliest possible date that a generic version of Avandia could become available to the public is in 2012, when the first patent for the drug expires. However, there are other circumstances that may come into pay that could extend the exclusivity of Avandia beyond 2012. These include variables such as pending lawsuits or other patents for specific Avandia uses. Once (and if) Avandia goes off patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Avandia drug.
