What’s the problem?
Fosavance (alendronic acid, colecalciferol) is a bisphosphonate medication prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis. In menopausal women, estrogen levels in the blood start to decrease, which leads to a loss of bone density. Rapid bone deterioration may lead to the development of osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones brittle and become prone to fractures and breaks. Fosavance works by binding to the bone and preventing calcium from being removed, which helps keep the bones strong and less likely to break. Unfortunately, bisphosphonates like Fosavance have been linked to a variety of catastrophic side effects in users taking the medications for an extended period of time.
In October 2010, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that bisphosphonates like Fosavance had been linked to two rare types of thigh fractures known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures. The FDA said in its alert that these unusual femur fractures have been most often reported in patients taking bisphosphonates, and that these injuries may be related to the long-term use of these drugs.

Fosavance & Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ)
Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a disease in which bone tissue in the jaw does not heal correctly. The onset of ONJ is linked with the temporary or permanent loss of blood to bone tissue, leading to death of the tissue and the eventual collapse of the bone. Common ONJ symptoms can include (but are not limited to):
- Loose teeth
- Exposed bone
- Jaw / gum pain
- Jaw / gum swelling
- Jaw / gum infection
- Jaw numbness
- Loss of sensation
- Dramatic gum loss
Over the past several years, scores of lawsuits have been filed against bisphosphonate manufacturers claiming that, instead of increasing bone density and strengthening bones, these medications can actually cause deterioration of the jaw bone and contribute to femur fractures.
Bisphosphonate Osteoporosis Drugs
In addition to Fosavance, bisphosphonate drugs include:
