What’s the problem?

May 4, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release today informing the public that Cleveland Beansprouts Co. of Cleveland, OH, is currently recalling all of its alfalfa sprouts because they have the potential to be contaminated with listeria.

All alfalfa sprouts produced by the company are affected by this recall. There are no lot codes, UPC numbers, or any other way to identify the product in question. The alfalfa sprouts being recalled were only distributed in the state of Ohio.

The issue was discovered through routine sampling by the Ohio Department of Agriculture which revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Anyone who has purchased Cleveland Beansprouts alfalfa sprouts should discard them immediately and consult a doctor if symptoms of food poisoning appear.

Listeria Food Poisoning Overview

Listeria poisoning (listeriosis) is a severe illness caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Signs and symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. According to statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 2,500 people contract listeria food poisoning each year in the United States, resulting in 500 deaths annually.
