What is a Class Action?

A class action is a type of lawsuit where one person or a handful or people sue on behalf of a large group of persons (class). A class action can involve hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands of people with similar complaints.

Generally a law firm will decide to file a class action as opposed to an individual lawsuit when the disputed issue is the same among a large enough group of people that it makes it impractical to file individual cases in numerous jurisdictions.

Most class action lawsuits begin as the result of an individual complaint by one person. Sometimes, after the persons complaint is thoroughly investigated by the law firm, it is discovered that many people have been adversely affected by the same offending entity.
