What’s the problem?

December 23, 2011 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that Avon Heights Mushrooms, Inc. is now recalling the following fresh spinach products because they may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7:

  • Krisp Pak 10oz. bags
  • Better Brand 10oz. bags
  • Avon Heights 4-2.51b bags

These products have a ‘best if used by’ code of DEC16 and codes DP 340 and T691. Consumers in possession of spinach products with these specific codes should discard them immediately or write the company for a full refund. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

E. Coli Food Poisoning

E. coli 0157:H7 is a dangerous foodborne pathogen because it produces a shiga toxin, which causes painful symptoms in humans including:

  • severe stomach cramps and stomach tenderness
  • diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody)
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • severe blood or kidney problems
  • kidney failure
  • long-term disability
  • death

In severe cases of E. coli poisoning, patients can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Both HUS and TTP are complications of E. coli that can cause kidney failure, brain damage, and damage to other organs and death.
