What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the large intestine and, in some cases, the small intestine. It is important to not confuse IBD with IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is less severe.
The primary forms of IBD are Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (UC).
The difference between Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis is the location and nature of the inflammatory changes opccuring in ones body. Crohn’s can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus (skip lesions), although a majority of the cases start in the terminal ileum. Ulcerative Colitis, in contrast, is restricted to just the colon and the anus.
