The efficacy and risk of serious, life-threatening side effects of the cholesterol-reducing drugs Zetia and Vytorin have recently been questioned by prominent physicians and an investigative article released by the New York Times.

According to the December 21, 2007 article, the drugs manufacturers conducted two separate studies, which showed an elevated risk of serious liver damage but never published the studies.

In addition, Public Citizen released a report in December 2004 stating in part, “Indeed, there is already evidence from the FDA Adverse Events Reports System (AERS) that Zetia may, on its own, cause rhabdomyolysis, a serious and potentially fatal disease involving destruction or degeneration of skeletal muscle.”

What’s the problem?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zetia (ezetimibe) in October 2002 to manage high cholesterol. It was approved to be used either alone or in combination with the widely used family of cholesterol lowering agents known as “statins.” More recently, in July of 2004, FDA approved a single combination pill of Vytorin (ezetimibe and simvastatin).

Zetia alone has rapidly moved on to the list of top-selling drugs with more than 4.2 million prescriptions being dispensed in 2003 in U.S. pharmacies. Expected sales of the drug for 2007 were estimated at $5 billion.

Zetia & Vytorin Efficacy Questioned by Members of U.S. Congress

In addition to the potential for serious liver damage, another study released in January 2008 questioned the efficacy of Vytorin (combination of Zetia and Zocor), as it showed no significant benefit in slowing atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) when compared to using Zocor alone.

Both doctors and some members of the U.S. Congress have complained questioning the negative results of the Enhance study that has been delayed, with some congressional leaders calling for an investigation.
