>> Tracleer (Bosentan)

Tracleer (generic: bosentan) is a prescription medication commonly used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The medication is taken orally and is used to improve the exercise ability of individuals diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Tracleer is manufactured by Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc. and received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2001, making it the first oral medication approved for use in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a condition involving a stiffening of the blood vessels in and around the lungs. This causes chronic high blood pressure and a significant decrease in the patient’s energy level. Patients diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension can become out of breath with the slightest physical exertion. Tracleer works by blocking the effects of endothelin on the body. Endothelin is a chemical naturally produced in the body that narrows the blood vessels and raises the blood pressure of individuals affected by pulmonary arterial hypertension. By blocking the effects of this chemical, Tracleer improves a patient’s ability to do routine daily tasks by increasing the patient’s energy and reducing the patient’s shortness of breath.

Typical side effects associated with the use of Tracleer include headache, stomach upset, itching, and nose or throat irritation. Less common side effects may include excessive fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and edema. In rare cases, Tracleer may cause a severe allergic reaction, characterized by itching, rash, trouble breathing, swelling, and dizziness. If any symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, the individual should seek medical treatment immediately. Tracleer has also been linked to serious liver problems. A physician should be notified if symptoms of liver damage appear, including stomach pain, vomiting, and jaundice.

Tracleer is considered an effective treatment for a very serious condition. Pulmonary arterial hypertension is considered life-threatening with an average survival rate of 3 years past diagnosis. It is believed that there are over 100,000 individuals in the United States living with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Tracleer treats the symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension, but is not considered a cure. There is no cure available for the condition.
