Revatio is a prescription medication used as an alternate treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension in patients that have not responded well to other common pulmonary arterial hypertension treatments. Generically known as Sildenafil, Revatio relaxes damaged blood vessels allowing them to widen. This makes it easier for blood to be pumped through the heart and into the lungs to receive oxygen. Revatio is effective in lowering the blood pressure of individuals with severe cases of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The medication was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2005.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a condition involving blood pressure levels that are dangerously high, mainly in the blood vessels leading from the heart to the lungs. Typical symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension include dizziness, fatigue, and breathing difficulty. If untreated, pulmonary arterial hypertension can lead to serious complications, heart failure, and death. It can occur alone or as a complication form another serious disease. Pulmonary arterial hypertension is considered a rare illness with a high mortality rate. It is estimated to affect close to 100,000 individuals and is considered incurable.

Typical side effects of Revatio include headache, upset stomach, flushing, nosebleeds, and insomnia. In rare cases, an erection lasting for an extended period may be experienced. This is common for this class of drugs (which includes Viagra) and should be reported to the physician. Erections lasting for longer than four hours are considered dangerous and ones lasting for six hours or longer may lead to loss of potency long term.

Clinical trials indicated that patients taking Revatio showed a significant improvement in exercise ability and blood pressure levels. They also could breathe easier and were hospitalized less often. Patients are prescribed Revatio after finding that other pulmonary arterial hypertension medications are ineffective. This medication is considered a significant advance in the quest for an effective treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. The medication is longer lasting than many other treatment options, costs less, and can be used in an earlier stage of the disease. Treating the condition early improves the patient’s quality of life and avoids the complications associated with later stages of the disease.
