Reglan (Metoclopramide) increases the rate at which the stomach and intestines move during digestion. It also increases the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines and increases the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter.
Reglan is used to treat diabetic gastric stasis (slow movement of the stomach), which causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, decreased appetite, and prolonged fullness after eating. It is also used to treat gastric reflux or heartburn (the regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus), prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, facilitation of small bowel intubation, and to facilitate x-ray examination of the stomach and intestines.
If you or a loved one have taken Reglan (Generic name: Metoclopramide) and developed a serious side effect like Parkinsons disease symptoms, Tardive Dyskinesia or Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, you should contact us immediately. You may be entitled to compensation and we can help.
Tardive dyskinesia is a neurological syndrome caused by the long-term use of neuroleptic drugs. Neuroleptic drugs are generally prescribed for psychiatric disorders, as well as for some gastrointestinal and neurological disorders.
Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements. Features of the disorder may include grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the arms, legs, and trunk may also occur. Involuntary movements of the fingers may appear as though the patient is playing an invisible guitar or piano.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome is normally associated with antipychotic drugs. It is an extremely serious Reglan side effect that usually creates a neurological emergency. Most patients develop Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome shortly after initial exposure to a drug.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome symptoms include high fever, sweating, unstable blood pressure, stupor, muscular rigidity, and autonomic dysfunction. In most cases, the disorder develops within the first 2 weeks of treatment with the drug; however, the disorder may develop any time during the therapy period.
