Permax Side Effects and Recall
Permax (Generic: pergolide), a drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease, has been recalled from the U.S. market due to the risk of serious damage to patients’ heart valves.
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published findings that link Permax and its generic Pergolide to life-threatening side effects including heart-valve damage and other serious heart conditions.
If you or a loved one have taken Permax or Pergolide and suffered from any of the side effects listed below, you should contact us immediately. You may be entitled to compensation and we can help.
Permax (Generic: pergolide mesylate) manufactured by Eli Lilly, is a drug which has been used by millions of Americans since 1989 to treat Parkinson’s disease as well as restless leg syndrome.
Parkinson’s disease is associated with low levels of a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Permax has some of the same effects of dopamine and is used to treat the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control of Parkinson's disease patients. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are at least 500,000 people in the United States suffering from Parkinson's disease. In addition, there are approximately 50,000 new cases reported per year.
Italian researchers found in approximately one-fourth of Parkinson's patients taking Permax had moderate to severe heart-valve damage. In addition, German researchers found that Parkinson’s patients taking Permax were five to seven times more likely to have leaky heart valves than patients taking similar alternatives.
Cardiologists from the prestigious Mayo Clinic have also found that Permax causes heart-valve damage and have recommended that anyone with heart problems not take any form of pergolide. In addition, the doctors have stated, "Pergolide should be discontinued if valvular disease is detected and no other cause identified."
In the 1980’s, the medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation Dr. Abraham Lieberman, was one of the first doctors to study Permax and Pergolide. Dr. Lieberman has stated, "There is evidence of pulmonary fibrosis that is associated with Pergolide as well as a 14-year history of people taking Permax … why hasn't this showed up sooner” he asks.
