Peter Pan Peanut Butter Recall Salmonella Food Poisoning Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter have been linked to a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella food poisoning (a bacterium that causes illness).

This type of food poisoning is a serious, life-threatening illness which has the ability to cause death in children, the elderly and/or persons with weakened immune systems.

FDA Update on Peanut Butter Recall

As a follow-up to the recent Salmonella outbreak linked to peanut butter, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is informing consumers that ConAgra has extended their recall of all Peter Pan peanut butter, and all Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111, including peanut butter toppings, back to October 2004. This information was obtained recently as part of the ongoing investigation being conducted by FDA.

FDA Warning and CDC Study

However, as we have witnessed with many food poisoning outbreaks in the past, the number of cases tend to increase as consumers become aware of the problem.

Surprisingly, the first case of peanut butter induced Salmonella food poisoning may have occurred in August 2006.

As a result of the aforementioned study and extensive epidemiological testing, the FDA and the CDC in association with ConAgra Foods, the manufacturer of Peter Pan peanut butter have issued a nationwide recall of all Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter jars, which have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number 2111.

Symptoms of Salmonella Food Poisoning

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Cramping
  • Vomiting and Nausea
  • Dehydration
