The Food and Drug Administration announced that the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch is putting women at higher risk of developing deadly blood clots. Some four million women use the Ortho Evra Patch. The FDA is warning Ortho Evra Patch users that they're being exposed to about 60 percent more of the hormone estrogen than they would be if they were on the pill. That extra estrogen increases the risk of developing blood clots and other serious side effects.
In a recent survey, the Associated Press found that 17 relatively healthy women died from blood clots believed to be related to the Ortho Evra patch. But even before the Ortho Evra patch was approved, the FDA noticed non-fatal blood clots from it were three times higher than that of the pill.
