Optison (Perflutren Protein-Type A Microspheres for Injection), an ultrasound micro-bubble contrast agent used in echocardiography has recently been linked to deaths and serious, life-threatening cardiopulmonary reactions.

If you or a loved one have experienced an adverse event or serious side effect after having an echocardiogram where the Definity contrast agent was used, you should contact us immediately. You may be entitled to compensation by filing a Definity lawsuit and we can help.

What’s the problem?

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has asked the manufacturers of ultrasound micro-bubble contrast agents Definity to add a “Boxed Warning” to their products because of recent reports linking them to deaths and serious, life-threatening cardiopulmonary reactions.

Four of the 11 reported deaths were caused by cardiac arrest occurring either during infusion or within 30 minutes following the administration of the contrast agent; most of the serious but non-fatal reactions also occurred in this time frame.

The FDA requested Boxed Warning would emphasize the risk for serious, life-threatening side effects including heart attacks and other cardiopulmonary reactions in patients with unstable angina, acute myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, or recent worsening congestive heart failure.
