What is Lead Poisoning?
Lead poisoning occurs when the amount of lead in a person's bloodstream is too high. An amount of lead the size of three granules of sugar if ingested daily is enough to poison a child.
Oral ingestion of lead dust and lead paint is the primary way that children get lead poisoning. Children under the age of six and pregnant women have the highest risk of lead poisoning.
Symptoms of Lead Poisoning in Children
Children exposed to even small amounts of lead can have serious mental and physical developmental problems. Low levels of exposure are almost impossible to detect without a blood test for lead.
Low-level exposure can cause hyperactivity, reading and learning disabilities, lowered IQ and behavioral problems.
High-level exposure to lead can result in damage to the nervous system, brain injuries, seizures, growth retardation, mental retardation, convulsions, coma and spontaneous death.
How are children exposed to Lead Based Paint?
When lead based paint deteriorates into chipping, peeling and flaking surfaces it creates a hazard for exposure to lead. Intact lead based paint poses no health threat, but when friction surfaces like doors and windows that contain lead based paint rub against themselves, dangerous lead dust is formed. This dust is invisible to the naked eye and spreads throughout a house, mixing with environmental dust on many surfaces. Children are at great risk for lead dust exposure when they put their fingers or toys that have lead dust on them into their mouth.
