Iloprost, also known as Ventavis, is an aerosol prescription medication commonly used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. It was developed by Schering AG and is currently marketed in the United States by Actelion Pharmaceuticals. Iloprost was approved for usage in Europe initially and gained US Food and Drug Administration approval for marketing in the United States in 2004. It is typically used only in severe cases of pulmonary arterial hypertension and is only effective for a limited amount of time.
Iloprost works by mimicking the effects of prostaglandin, a substance that naturally occurs in the body. The medication dilates the blood vessels in the body, lowering blood pressure and easing the strain on the heart. It also prevents blood clots from forming, effectively reducing the patients risk of heart attack or stroke due to pulmonary arterial hypertension. Iloprost has been shown to improve the survival rate of people with pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as improving physical capability, blood circulation, and breathing difficulties.
The medication comes in an aerosolized form for easy inhalation. Patients inhale between six and eight puffs of the medication at two to three hour intervals. Side effects associated with the use of Iloprost include headache, nausea, flushing, and low blood pressure. There are also some serious adverse events associated with the use of Iloprost. These include angina pectoris, peripheral edema, kidney failure, and congestive heart failure. Because the medication lowers the blood pressure in the body, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting may occur, especially when rising from a sitting or lying position. Standing slowly may help alleviate this side effect.
