The popular drug Ergotamine tartrate used to treat prevent and treat migraine headaches has been linked by the FDA to serious, life-threatening side effects.

Furthermore, the FDA has ordered 20 separate companies to cease the illegal manufacturing and marketing of Ergotamine.

What is the Problem?

On March 1, 2007 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) sent warning letters to approximately 20 different companies ordering them to cease the illegal marketing of unapproved drug products containing Ergotamine tartrate.

In addition to marketing these products without FDA approval, most of the companies receiving warning letters have omitted from their drugs’ labeling critical warnings regarding the potential for serious, possibly fatal, interactions with certain other drugs.

Ergotamine & Vascular or Migraine Headaches

Ergotamine tartrate products are used to treat migraine or vascular headaches. Ergotamine is a vasoconstrictor and is sometimes mixed with caffeine. When Ergotamine is mixed with caffeine it works by preventing blood vessels in the head from expanding and causing headaches.
