Dostinex Side Effects and Recall
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published findings that link Dostinex and its generic Cabergoline to life-threatening side effects including heart-valve damage and other serious heart conditions.

Dostinex (Generic:cabergoline), manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. is used to treat the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control of Parkinson's disease patients. The drug is also used to treat Restless Leg Syndrome and different types of medical problems that occur when too much of the hormone prolactin is produced. It can also be used to treat certain menstrual problems, fertility problems in men and women, and pituitary prolactinomas (tumors of the pituitary gland).
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are at least 500,000 people in the United States suffering from Parkinson's disease. In addition, there are approximately 50,000 new cases reported per year.
Italian researchers found in approximately one-fourth of Parkinson's patients taking Dostinex had moderate to severe heart-valve damage. In addition, German researchers found that Parkinson’s patients taking Dostinex were five to seven times more likely to have leaky heart valves than patients taking similar alternatives.
Cardiologists from the prestigious Mayo Clinic have also found that Dostinex causes heart-valve damage and have recommended that anyone with heart problems not take any form of cabergoline. In addition, the doctors have stated, "Cabergoline should be discontinued if valvular disease is detected and no other cause identified."
In the 1980’s, the medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation Dr. Abraham Lieberman, was one of the first doctors to study Dostinex and Cabergoline. Dr. Lieberman has stated, "There is evidence of pulmonary fibrosis that is associated with Cabergoline as well as a 14-year history of people taking Dostinex … why hasn't this showed up sooner” he asks.
