A stroke, also commonly referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in the medical community, is an acute neurological injury where the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted, either by arterial blockage or rupture (hemorrhage).
The part of the brain affected by a blocked or burst artery can no longer receive oxygen carried by the blood and the brain cells are therefore damaged or die. A stroke is a medical emergency that can cause permanent neurological damage and death if not promptly diagnosed and treated.
