FDA Bextra Recall

In probably one of the most disturbing corporate scandals in the history of the United States, Biomedical Tissue Services was ordered by the Food & Drug Administration to cease its manufacturing operations and sales of its body parts used for transplants.

It is estimated that approximately 13,000 patients have been affected by the Biomedical Tissue Services recall.

What is the Problem?

Four employees of Biomedical Tissue Services, including the owner of the company, have been indicted on 122 counts in Brooklyn, New York for taking body parts from cadavers without legal consent and selling them without proper disease screening.

Recipients of these body parts may be at risk of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, AIDS, syphilis, cancer and other serious communicable diseases because the firm did not properly screen the donors for risk factors for communicable diseases before selling the bodies to transplant facilities.

Who is Responsible?

Biomedical Tissue Services is under criminal investigation for selling body parts to several large tissue transplant companies including: Regeneration Technologies, LifeCell Corporation, Tutogen Medical Inc., SpinalGraft Technologies, LLC, Lost Mountain Tissue Bank, and Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas and Medtronic Incorporated. In addition, many of the funeral homes that provided the stolen tissue are also being investigated.

Currently, the exact number of patients who received tissue from Biomedical Tissue Services is unknown. A preliminary estimate made by the Food and Drug Administration states the number is close to 13,000. Medtronic Incorporated is probably the most affected, as they distributed approximately 8,000 units of the stolen body parts used for transplants.
