There are a number of different medications used to control the symptoms and manage the effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension. There is no known cure for the condition so the best that medical professionals can do is try to make the patient as comfortable as possible and try to slow the progression of the condition to give the patient as many good, productive years as they can. The average survival time for individuals that have been diagnosed with the condition is three years after diagnosis, as many cases of pulmonary arterial hypertension are not diagnosed until the late stages of the disorder.

Beraprost is one of the medications designated to treat the symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension in certain individuals. Manufactured by United Therapeutics, the medication is intended for use in treating cases of pulmonary arterial hypertension that are detected in the early stages of the condition, either through routine detection or from the appearance of suspicious symptoms. It is also intended for use in treating cases of peripheral vascular disease that have been detected in the early stages of the condition.

Beraprost contains a chemically stable form of the chemical prostacyclin and has been formulated into an easy to take oral tablet. The medication works by increasing the dilation of the blood vessels that have been affected by pulmonary arterial hypertension, along with preventing platelet aggregation. It is believed that the medication is a very important agent to reduce the effects of early stage pulmonary arterial hypertension and slow the progression of the condition.

Patients that have taken Beraprost as a treatment method have reported a significant reduction of pain at rest and an increased sensation of cold in the extremities. Patients that had taken the medication were more mobile for longer distances without pain than the patients that received a placebo in the clinical trial. This will greatly improve the patient’s quality of life by allowing them to remain mobile and pain-free for as long as possible while dealing with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Beraprost was also found to directly affect the effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension on the body by reducing pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance while increasing the cardiac output by a significant amount. The medication was well tolerated in the individuals that took the drug during the clinical trials and very few patients reported adverse side effects from taking the medication.

Because there is no cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension, medical professionals and drug manufacturers are trying to find the most effective medications that can be used by the widest number of people to reduce the symptoms and the effects that the condition has on the body. Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a life threatening condition and the average survival rate for individuals diagnosed with the illness is three years after diagnosis. More early detection methods are being researched to find the best ways to diagnose pulmonary arterial hypertension while the individual is still in the early stages of the condition when treatments are most effective.
